Griffin
Lotson wants to be Georgia's next Lieutenant
Governor bad, REAL bad. If the residents
of rural Georgia and the right amount of
their fellow citizens in metro Atlanta catch
Lotson's vision for the Peach State, his
dream just may become reality.
Lotson may
be a stranger to some but he is well known
inside both Atlanta's and Washington's beltways.
"The Right Man for the Job" as
he refers to himself is a former civil servant
with FBI and CIA clearance and 20 years
of federal and state experience. Lotson
is also a seasoned consultant that's even
been called upon by the White House, the
Georgia Municipal Association, the Georgia
Department of Community Affairs and the
United States Department of Agriculture.
While Lotson
continues to keep company with political
power brokers like former President Jimmy
Carter and gubernatorial candidate Cathy
Cox, his grassroots efforts in the areas
of human and community development is what
gets the attention of Georgia's commoners.
As the Executive Director for eighteen years
of Sams Memorial Community Economic Development
- a non-profit empowerment agency - Lotson
has raised over $10 million dollars for
Georgia families to improve their housing
and educational needs. Along the way he
has served on the boards of the Rural Georgia
Collaborative, the Lieutenant Governor's
Housing task force for the state of Georgia
and Habitat for Humanity in his home county
of McIntosh to name a few. "I'm the
only candidate with local, state, national
and international experience dealing with
economic development; real community problems,
job creation and working in diverse groups,"
Lotson says.
The father
of three military members and husband of
30 years is a former candidate for Mayor
of Darien, Georgia and even served as Representative
Al Williams' Campaign Manager. His platform
is progressive and in some respects groundbreaking.
It includes the dismantlement of racism,
small business and jobs creation, more and
better services for rural Georgia and the
preservation of the coast's Geechee Gullah
Culture. In fact on the day of this interview
the southeast Georgia native was on his
way to Sapalo Island, Georgia to help develop
a means of preserving the residents' way
of life. Lotson hopes his bold desires propel
him into history as the state's first Black
Lieutenant Governor. "Everywhere that
I go in the state the feeling is that the
rest of Georgia has been traditionally left
out when the $18 billion operating budget
is divvied up," reveals Lotson. "When
I'm elected, my job will be to provide more
services for people outside of metropolitan
Atlanta."
Lotson insists
that he has nothing against the state capital,
but is a little concerned with the way business
has been done in the past as it relates
to rural Georgia residents. While he will
continue to reach out to fellow Democrats,
Republicans and Independents, his focus
if elected will be on an economic plan that
will help the less fortunate as well as
the financially stable through diversity.
Lotson's goal is to reconnect the 4 million
voters of rural Georgia as well as the state's
1.6 million minorities to the Gold Dome.
These aspirations recently caused a Macon
reporter to refer to him as a "Sleeping
Giant" The Lieutenant Governorship
is so promising says Lotson that he has
already claimed it, although he must first
defeat four other opponents beginning on
July 18th before taking office. "Most
candidates are concerned about themselves,
but the greater concern that I have is getting
Democrats back in position to do a better
job," stated Lotson poignantly. "I
will be the first African-American elected
Lieutenant Governor of Georgia and I'm well
qualified to fulfill the position!"
