Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Rev. Jacob Parker have been selected to receive the Church/Preacher of the Year Award by The Informer and will be honored at The Informer's Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Ceremony. The event will be held on January 17, 2015 at 12 noon at Ebenezer Baptist Church, located at 777 Elm Street in Macon, Georgia.
A native of Bibb County, the Reverend Jacob Parker has blessed his family and community in numerous ways throughout the years. Married for 54 years to the lovely Annie Ruth Parker, the couple has five successful children, six grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Rev. Parker holds a degree in Business Administration from LaSalle University in Chicago and completed theological studies at the American Baptist Theological Extension Center in Macon.
Rev. Parker is retired from Robins AFB and has pastored Ebenezer Baptist Church since 1967. He is a member of the NAACP, the SCLC and the Baptist Ministers Union of Macon and Vicinity. Rev. Parker holds the distinction of the first African American radio announcer at WFPM in Fort Valley, Georgia and is the recipient of the 2009 Earl Shinholster Award. Faithfully leading his flock at Ebenezer, he has licensed 13 into the ministry; ordained 10 into the ministry; and ordained 40 deacons.
Ebenezer Baptist Church and Rev. Parker believe in ministry inside and outside the walls of the church. Ministries in Service include the Food Bank; Clothes Bank; Breakfast Ministry (prepares breakfast on Sunday mornings and special occasions of the church); Van/Bus Ministry; College Education Fund; Junior and Senior Missions; the Couple's Ministry; the Nurses Guild; the Booster Ministry; Grief Support Group; Prayer Ministry; Telephone Ministry for outreach ministry and for keeping in contact with members and ministries; The Golden Warrior Ministry whose objective is to serve the three score and ten members; the Men's Ministry who is at work improving the adjacent property for future use; and the Communion Ministry who administers to the sick and shut-ins every First Saturday of the month. Two 48 passengers' bus and two vans have been purchased during Rev. Jacob’s guidance for these and other ministries.
"Rev. Parker has the respect of so many people in Macon and the surrounding area," said Barbara Allen, Secretary and Treasurer at Ebenezer Baptist Church. "He truly loves the Lord as evident through his preaching; because of who he is in Christ, God has blessed us with his leadership for 47 years."
The Informer is honored to recognize Ebenzer Baptist Church and the Rev. Jacob Parker as Church and Preacher of the Year for 2014.
