The Motivating Youth Foundation in Macon, Georgia will raffle a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro or a cash prize of $15,000, as well as gift cards totaling $3,000 in this year's fundraiser to benefit community youth.
Tickets for the raffle are only $25 and all proceeds will be used for scholarships to assist local youth with college, a dream that many might have given up on otherwise. "We help students who want to go to college," said Roger Jackson, Founder and Executive Director of MOYO. "Many young people are concerned about the cost of college tuition these days and wonder if they will be able to go. We help students realize their dreams of success." Students from Bibb and surrounding counties can apply for one of the scholarships and must write an essay in order to be eligible. Winning essays are chosen by a panel of judges that includes local educators.
The holder of the prize-winning ticket will receive a 2015 Camaro in his/her choice of available colors, or can choose the $15,000 cash option. The second place ticket receives a $2,000 Ken's Stereo gift card and third place receives a Ken's Stereo $1,000 gift card.
"This is a spin-off from when we raffled the million dollar home," said Jackson. "We found it difficult to generate interest in the home, but anyone would love a brand new Camaro." In the three years since the raffle of the home, Motivating Youth has partnered with a number of sponsors, including the Omega Psi Phi fraternity which afforded the nonprofit the ability to go nationally and online for ticket sales. "Another tremendous advantage has been our partnership with Mid South Federal Credit Union," he said. "Being a small nonprofit and being able to partner with eight branches of Mid South in Macon, Warner Robins and Milledgeville has been an incredible benefit to the event." Youman's Chevrolet in Macon and Ken's Stereo Junction have also been instrumental partners in the raffle from its inception, which has resulted in 74 scholarships being awarded to area youth for college tuition.
As a former NFL professional football player, Jackson understands the importance of mentoring our youth. "We need to inspire our kids to reach for their goals," he said. "The odds today are really against the young person with only a high school education or GED. If the child drops out of school, the chances for success are almost nonexistent. You can make the difference in a young person’s life by purchasing a ticket this year."
Tickets can be purchased online at www.moyofoundation.com or at any branch of Mid South Federal Credit Union in Macon, Warner Robins and Milledgeville and at the following locations:
Ken’s Stereo Junction (Macon and Warner Robins)
Overtyme Bar & Grill
Elite Fitness in Gray, Georgia
The drawing for the winning tickets will be held on December 23, 2014 at Mid South Federal Credit Union, located at 4810 Mercer University Drive in Macon. Tickets can be purchased until 1pm on December 23rd and the winners will be announced at the drawing. The public is invited to attend.
"It's that time of year again," said Jackson. "Consider purchasing a raffle ticket as a gift toward a young person's college education. It's not really about purchasing the winning ticket-everyone wins when you help send a young person to college." Ticket purchases are also tax deductible.
Roger Jackson founded the nonprofit 501(c)3 Motivating Youth Foundation in 2008 and the After School Program opened its doors in 2009. The program provides opportunities for youth to excel in school through hands-on tutoring, online tutoring, motivation, rap sessions, character-building, and one-on-one and group mentoring through social and athletic field trips. Located at 905 Main Street in east Macon, the after school program is open from 3pm – 6pm during the school year and from 8am until 5pm during the summer months.
