The ABC's of Building a Life:
Step into Your Future

by Rena Canady Laster, Life Coach

Congratulations to graduates everywhere! As I reflect on the importance of this monumental accomplishment and draw from my years of experience and mistakes, I have learned that it's not just the academics that are important in your life. The application of basic life skills and a proper mindset are of equal importance. Martin Luther King said it best when he said, "Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education".

Enjoy your life's journey and don't abandon your dreams along the way. When obstacles block your path, use the obstacles as stepping stones toward your destiny. Obstacles will come. Face that fact and keep it moving. Life is a journey and each experience will teach you something. Realize that some obstacles will be placed in your way by your decisions. So, always weigh your decisions and seek wise counsel. Heed the mistakes of others and avoid making unnecessary mistakes. Your path is your own. Not everyone desires to go where you desire to go in life. Whatever you decide to do in life, base it on your passion, purpose and goals. And, never be afraid to expose yourself to new things because you may find that the exposure sparks new areas of interest. Here are some ABC’s to remember as you graduate on to bigger and better things. Tear out this page and take it with you to your next chapter in life and refer to it often.

Always be mindful of your actions and their consequences.

Blessings come in many forms. Don't despise small beginnings, people, or things.

Choices determine your destiny. Make wise ones.

Dream big. With faith nothing is impossible.

Education is life-long. Never stop learning, reading, or being open to new experiences.

Friends determine your elevation. Make sure they're taking you up, not bringing you down.

Goals are roadmaps. Make sure they're Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-limited.

Health cannot be bought back when you're older. Take care of it now.

"I am" statements and affirmations remind you of who you are. Remind yourself daily. Ex. "I am successful". "I am filled with purpose and destiny".

Journey through life with passion, purpose, goals and vision.

Knowledge must be applied in order for it to have power.

Legacy follows you. Leave trails of success for others to follow.

Mistakes don't mean that you're a failure. They mean that you're tried something new. Learn from them and keep going.

Never give up. Persevere. Never give up.

Opportunities are sometimes disguised as obstacles. Obstacles can be character builders.

Patience is a virtue. Develop it. Procrastination is not your friend and poor preparation leads to poor performance.

Question everything and listen to the hard answers. Life is trying to teach you something.
Remember your roots and what you've been taught by your teachers, parents, mentors, and church. And, manners matter always.

Service to mankind is the debt you pay for your room on earth. Help others and don’t be selfish.

Time cannot be bought back. Don't waste it. Learn the power of "NO" and say it when people and things desire to take you off task.

Unconditional love for yourself is important. Be your own cheerleader. Don’t listen to critics and negative people.

Vision is impossible without your eyes being open. Stay awake, focused, and open to hearing God regarding your path. Write your vision and keep it before you.

Wisdom comes from the wise. Glean from them. Pick their brains. Spend time with your elders.

Xcellence. Xcellence. Strive for it.

Your attitude will elevate you or set you back. It reflects your self-esteem, outlook, maturity, adaptability, responsibility, and your level of flexibility.

Zeal and passion will help you to persevere in times of difficulty. Never give up.
God bless you all and I wish you much success!!!
