Greg Winters Seeks Reelection as District Attorney for Macon Judicial Circuit

by Amanda Smith

Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney Greg Winters seeks reelection to his seat in the November 6, 2012 general election. He faces opponent David Cooke for the position.

A Macon native, Greg graduated from Central High School and received his undergraduate degree from Georgia College, followed by his law degree from Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. While in law school, he worked as a law clerk in the District Attorney's office in the Macon Judicial Circuit and it was during this time that he realized he was called to be a prosecutor.

After graduating from law school, Greg was hired as an Assistant District Attorney in the Dublin Judicial Circuit and remained there until he joined the Macon Judicial Circuit in 2001. Since that time, he has focused predominately on violent crimes such as rape and aggravated child molestation and has handled everything from traffic tickets to death penalty motions before the Georgia Supreme Court. In 2010, Greg was elected as District Attorney for the Macon Judicial Circuit. One of his first acts as DA was to cut his budget by 5%, a savings in excess of $150,000. "Even with these savings, we had an increase of 84% in the number of trials and a 14% increase in the number of guilty pleas," said Greg. "We are working hard and will continue to do so."

"I also want to continue to work with law enforcement and focus on the violent crime we have; we need to address that issue," said Greg. "We also want to institute an early intervention program to move cases through the court system more quickly; this way, victims can have closure and can see the judicial process working in a quicker manner."

Greg is an active member of the William Augustus Bootle Inn of Court and the Young Lawyers Division of the Macon Bar Association. He is also a member of Leadership Macon, the Rotary Club of Macon and the District Attorneys Association. His community service involves working as a volunteer with Rebuilding Macon and the Ronald McDonald House.

He is married to the lovely Lisa Odom Winters, his high school sweetheart, and the couple has two children. The Winters' are active members of Vineville Baptist Church where Lisa works with the Women's and Preschool Ministry and Greg works with the Youth Program, the Men's Ministry and has served as a past Chairman of the Board of Deacons.
