Carol W. Hunstein
Supreme Court Justice
At age 23, Carol Hunstein was a divorced,
single mother who had lost her left leg to cancer. She is a
study in overcoming adversity, having attended college from 1968
until 1976, when she received her Juris Doctorate from the Stetson
University College of Law and was admitted to the Georgia Bar
Association. She served as the first female Superior Court
Judge in Dekalb County and in 1992, was nominated by Governor
Zell Miller to the Supreme Court of Georgia, only the second woman
in Georgia history to serve in that position. Since her
nomination, she has been re-elected by voters three times, most
recently in November of 2006. Justice Hunstein also serves as
an adjunct professor at Emory University.
