Evelyn Lowery

President of Women's SCLC

Evelyn Lowery has been a champion of civil rights since the age of 18, her father having served as president of the local chapter of the NAACP in Memphis.  Her activism has continued throughout her adult life and marriage to the Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery.  In 1979, Evelyn formed SCLC/Women, an organization that advocates the rights of women, children, and families.  She also formed the Women's Empowerment Training Center and the Bridging-the-Gap women to girls mentoring program.
