$250,000 Lottery

Second Macon Officer To Win In Months

A Macon, Georgia police officer said he is in disbelief after winning $250,000 in the Georgia Lottery. Richard Wolverton, 43, matched the first five numbers in the July 6 Mega Millions drawing, winning the quarter-million dollar second prize.

He purchased the winning Quik Pik ticket at Riverside Exxon, 2900 Riverside Drive in Macon. Winning numbers from the July 6 Mega Millions drawing were: 3-9-12-25-47 and the Mega Ball was 37. Wolverton checked his lucky numbers on the Georgia Lottery Web site.

“I said to myself, ‘This can’t be right,’ ” he said. “I told my cousin, and she couldn’t believe it.”

Wolverton plans to invest his winnings. He is one of two Macon police officers to win the Georgia Lottery in recent months. Wendell Collier of Macon won $50,000 playing the instant game Georgia’s $500 Million Club in June.

“I feel lucky in life and even luckier that I’ve won,” said Collier, 40.

As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia. Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned over $9.3 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia ’s Prekindergarten Program. More than 1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 790,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
