Leadership (A Black History Poem Honoring The Legacy of My Parents)
by Rena Canady Laster, Transformational Life Coach, Consultant and Trainer
Here, at Arlington National Cemetery,
I, Rena Canady Laster,
Daughter of the late Rena Postell,
Wife of CPL. Johnnie B. Canady,
Am legacy.
Am leadership,
From good examples,
Great teaching
Still reaching
The lives of generations to come.
New beginnings,
New seasons,
New reasons to live and to give.
Tell me about your people
A line from the movie Beloved said.
People living,
People dead.
Who.
What they do.
What they did,
Don’t keep it hid.
Were they leaders?
Or did they sleep, creep,
Rolling stones from bed to bed?
Or never alone
Because they were led
By the father above?
A stone, a rock
A firm foundation
Ready and able to lead a nation?
Proverbs 31 Woman,
Strong, Godly men;
Show me the way
By your actions
And not by what you say.
Lead, lead the way.
Today.
Tomorrow.
Into the future.
Leadership personified.
Great lives,
Honoring those who died;
Giving their all
To make sure that we are somebody.
Who can you honor during Black History Month? Whose life has impacted you? Whose shoulders do you stand on as you carry out your vision for your life? Are you making history? Are you the person that our ancestors prayed for? Let’s all do our part to be role models for our youth. Remember: We ARE black history.
