Herbert Dennard’s team of volunteers from the Walk Away Initiative are now holding workshops on Nonviolence and Conflict Resolutions for inmates in the Bibb County Jail.

The goals of these workshops are to encourage mindfulness and self reflection to the inmates. Meditation and other techniques are taught to help the inmates manage their emotions and reactions to difficult situations. There will be group discussions to allow the inmates to share, discuss, and reflect on their experiences with violence and to learn from one another. This will help them to emphasize the importance of empathy and to understand different perspectives of others, which can help reduce the likelihood of violent conflicts.

The workshops will encourage community building and also encourage inmates to form positive relationships with one another and create a peaceful community within the prison.

The inmates will be provided post-release support, a plan to develop and practice non-violence, and will also be provided resources and support to help them succeed in life after they are released.

“There were approximately 70 violent deaths in Macon during 2022. The additional objective is to drastically decrease this count for 2023” stated Herbert Dennard.

Herbert Dennard is the Executive Director of Changing Mindsets Inc., a non profit organization.
